Increasing Throughput in Downstream Processing
Hans Berg, Joakim Svensson, Catharina Hemström Nilsson
Recent developments in upstream processing have resulted in increased protein expression levels and larger feed volumes — both of which affect downstream purification. Trends indicate that processing fermentation broth volumes of 15,000 L or more per shift soon could be the norm. Facing economic constraints in the race to get to market first with new products, biopharmaceutical manufacturers need to raise the productivity of their processing operations without compromising either product safety or quality.
