Production of therapeutic proteins in large-scale animal cell cultures continues to increase. The availability and cost of desired products such as interferons and therapeutic antibodies depend not only on sophisticated modifications of cell-line genomes, but also on the volumetric productivity achievable in bioreactor technology. The yield of product at harvest largely depends on the metabolism that controls the channeling of nutrients to synthesize both biomass and product.
